Writing the Perfect Cover Letter

what Takes a cover letter from good to great?

Make it personal. Unlike a resume, a cover letter should change for every single job you apply to. Be sure to share why you are interested in the position and what makes you a good candidate. Is it your attention to detail, your passion for the community, or your experience with a very similar job that make you a good fit? Share what makes you stand out in your cover letter, and highlight your skills and experience.

how long should my Cover letter be?

Just like a resume, a cover letter should be no more than one page long. It should be long enough to include the relevant details that make you an excellent candidate for the job, but if it is too long there is a chance it won't be read.

What should i include?

Think of your cover letter as a summary of your resume. Be sure to include the following:

  • The job you are applying for

  • Details explaining why your experience and skills make you a great fit for the available position

  • Why you want the position. It might seem silly, but if you're excited about a job opportunity don't be afraid to say that and share why. Employers want to hire people who are excited about the work, not just someone who wants any job

  • Ask for an interview, and be sure to include your contact information so that the employer knows how to contact you
